PostSubject: Christmas? ..what's that?   Tue Dec 06, 2011 1:41 pm

KAY SO.
for those of us here in North America, we've always called it Christmas. we've always said "Merry Christmas". That's how it's advertised and how it should be.

But now all these other cultures are coming in here and whining and complaining about the phrase "Merry Christmas" ? How it doesn't match/meet up with their cultural standards and such. They've raised such a ruckus now in the last few years, that most companies are now changing it to "Happy Holidays"

This kinda makes me rage. These are the two biggest multicultural countries in the world. The melting pot (USA) and the cultural mosaic (Canada), and we're having to change things because a few immigrants are whining about things like that?

If you don't like it, dont live here. Canada lets you in and you repay it by doing this to it's history and culture?

Any one else have opinions on this? confused

I completly agree with you dane, not only other people from other culture try to push their relgion to othe citizen, they have to change our beleif also. If they come to our contry they should respect our own cultur, we are not obligating them to change theirs but we ask a bit of respect.

It really burns me up now, they are trying to control everything, if theyre not happy then they should leave and stay in their own country. This irritates me so muchhhhh! Hmph. that said...

MERRY CHRISTMAS! Very Happy lol

it's worse than you think. There is a prevalent double standard out there.

If you were to go to another culturally based country and "insist" on "Happy Holidays", I can guarantee you would not be received thoughtfully and with consideration.

Okay, I will probably open up a whole can of mess here, but I'll at least say my peace. The reason people have an aversion to using Christmas in the holiday is because the Christmas holiday is based on the birth of Jesus. It is a most definate Christian holiday. To a lot of people, accecpting Christmas is a way of saying that there is a God which puts them in a battle of beliefs that some are not willing to fight. They have to examine themselves and come to grips with sin and what sin is and how they may have sinned. Now, that being said, it is NOT right to deny anyone of their own religious beliefs, but it seems that the group that wants to get rid of "Christmas" is trying to do just that and they honestly believe that Christians have no say in the matter because THEY are the ones trying to push their religion on everyone else by celebrating the Christmas season. I find it rather strange that the very people who are offended by it are doing exactly what they accuse Christians of doing...yep, its a conundrum all right. As a Christian, I celebrate Christmas and Easter; however, I dont celebrate Halloween or Valentines Day. I don't tell others why I dont celebrate it, but I dont hassle those that do either...its none of my business. So I have to agree with you E love...if everyone just let others have the right to celebrate without saying they are right or wrong...we would not have this problem.

you've all got some good points.

i don't like the "forcing on them", cause no one does that. Tons of people celebrate it, but no one flaunts it in their faces. It's an international holiday it's just there. people have chosen to not partake and celebrate Chanukkah instead, or something else. Why must this group be such a pain in the ass. Especially in this say and age? When comprehension of foreign and unkown things is becoming so common.

Heh. You're not very travelled, are you?

Most everyone does it. They don't want other people not doing what they do, or not believing what they believe.

Also, "comprehension" is something that is lacking as well.

only in Canada. :p
gay's and lesbian's and transgender and all that is becoming much more common, and although there are still suicides and bullying happening, people are realizing that things have to change.

Comprehension is becoming more popular.

Although maybe not with Christmas and immigrants.
